1827 ENGLISH TELESCOPE Around 1770 With original case and wooden tripod Sold by Henry Gregory and Sons in London 87 x 28 x 9 cm Provenance: Swiss private collection Certificate: This object is accompanied by an explanatory letter in German With the invention of the telescope around 1600, the distant worlds moved a little closer and new insights were quickly gained. „And yet it turns“, Galileo said, and at the same time placed the sun at the centre of our planetary system. Astrology became astronomy. The telescope allowed us to see the beginning of infinity a little better and this idea has fascinated us for centuries. The exploration of space began slowly, but it was to take another three hundred years before man came physically closer to the stars. By looking through the telescope, people researched and dreamed about the stars and other worlds at the same time. The telescope seems to be complete and in worthy condition. It occurred about 6000 years ago over what is now Argentina after a collision between two aste- roids. The area where the meteorite hit is called Campo del Cielo (Spanish for “field of the sky”). The velocity of the larger meteorite fragments was so high that more than 20 deep craters were for- med. The largest of them is as large as a football field in diameter. For the first time, the parts of the meteorite were documented by Spanish explorers in 1576. The individual pieces found since 1576 weigh from a fewmilligrams to an astonishing 30 tons. The round and beautiful indentations on the surface are called regmaglypts and were formed during the fall of the meteorite when its surface started to melt in the Earth‘s atmosphere.
