1804* SPACE SHUTTLE 54 MISSION Nasa code KSC - 93PC - 149 Launch of Space Shuttle Endeavour Vintage chromogenic print on Kodak paper 20 x 25 cm Provenance: Italian private collection This picture shows the spacecraft Endeavour, surrounded by large clouds of smoke, during its launch from Kennedy Space Center on January 13, 1993. This was the third flight of this space shuttle. The mission successfully put into orbit the fifth data relay satellite, which provided better data transmission, and was of great import- ance for NASA‘s other manned missions. Endeavour carried out a total of 25 missions, after which it found its final landing place as a museum piece at the California Science Center in Los Angeles, where it has been on display since October 2012. The mission objective was to launch the United States Microgravity laboratory into orbit for its first mission. This mission lasted 13 days, 19 hours, 30 minutes and 4 seconds and became the lon- gest manned space shuttle mission in the history of spaceflight. This photo depicts the Space Shuttle Columbia during its launch on its 9,200,000-kilometer journey into space. The mirror of the telescope, which had been put into orbit three years earlier, was faulty, resulting in blurry images. During this mission, the crew could install the COSTAR system and the WF/PC-II camera, which successfully corrected the main mirror defect. This image shows astronaut Jeffrey A. Hoffman during the third of five spacewalks. Hoffman‘s job was to give instructions to Swiss astronaut Claude Nicollier while Nicollier operated the shuttle‘s robot arm.
