1869* DICRANURUS ELEGANS Trilobite Montana, USA Lower devonian, 350 million years 9.5 x 6 x 5 cm Provenance: - Siber & Siber - Swiss private collection Dicranurus (Greek, ‚dikranon‘, a pitchfork, and ‚oura‘, tail) is a genus of Lower to Middle Devonian odontopleurid trilobites that lived in a shallow sea that lay between Euramerica and Gondwana, corres ponding to modern-day Oklahoma and New York. Their bodies averaged about 1 inch (25 mm) in length, though their large spikes made them at least 2 inches (51 mm) in length. It is speculated that such tremendous spikes hampered the ability of predators, such as arthrodire placoderms, to attack them, as well as to help prevent them from sinking into the soft mud of their environment. This specimen presented here is of very fine quality and shows barely any restaurations. Its name is derived from the ancient Greek „hematoeis“ (bloody). According to the red coloration of some hematite varieties, the stone is also called bloodstone and is also known as specularite. Hematite was used as a pigment for cave paintings and body painting as early as the Paleolithic period. The stone used for healing was already known by the early Egyptians and Indians to stop bleeding. Even today, hematite is used as a healing stone in esoteric circles, especially for blood diseases.
