3267* MARC CHAGALL (Vitebsk 1887–1985 Saint-Paul-de-Vence) Grand bouquet à Vence. 1973. Oil and pastel on masonite. Signed lower right: Marc / Chagall. 35 × 27 cm. The authenticity of the work has been confirmed by the Comité Marc Chagall, Paris, 3.12.2002. Provenance: - Ida Chagall collection. - Private collection Milan. - Galleria A.M., Verona. - Private collection, Bergamo, Italy. In the present painting, the central flower bouquet is surrounded by the well-known pair of lovers on the right side and the green head of a donkey in the top left corner. As a landscape, warm brown tones in the background outline Chagall's adopted home Saint-Paul-de-Vence with the distinctive tower of the Église Saint- Paul, while the horizontal band in front of it serves to echo the white of the flowers. Particualry impressive is the generous, impasto use of color that Chagall chose for the execution of the flowers, which increases the effect of white, red and violet bouquet on the composition.
