Literature: Franz Meyer: Marc Chagall. Leben und Werk, Cologne 1961, no. 885 (with ill.). This black-and-white female nude is a fine example of Marc Chagall's work in ink. In addition to the many coloured works for which the artist is best known, there are also a large number of ink drawings. Thematically, these works are no different from his oil paintings. Here, Chagall focuses on the female nude, sitting frontally in a large format. At the top right, a male face can be seen gazing at the sea- ted beauty. The scene embodies love, a recurring theme for the artist: his first wife and great love, Bella Rosenfeld Chagall, often sat for him until her death in 1944, and even after she was gone, his nudes and floating lovers always refer to her.
