Der bekrönte Tathagata hält die rechte Hand in der Geste der Wunschgewährung, die linke über dem Schoss. Die Zipfel zweier Schals sind elegant über den Rand des doppelten Lotossockels drapiert. Der stehende Buddha ist mit einer anliegenden Mönchsrobe bekleidet, die in feinen, konzentrischen Falten herabfällt. Die rechte Hand ist in abhayamudra erhoben, die linke Hand in varadamudra gesenkt. Mit Metallstand. Provenienz: Sammlung Auguste Gérard (1852–1922), franzö- sischer Gesandter in Peking (1893–1897) und Botschafter in Japan (1907–1913). Wohl identisch mit dem im Inventar von 1906 aufgeführten „Boudha en bronze doré“, das Auguste Gérard dem Vicomte Paul du Toict (1847–1909) anvertraute, einer prominenten Persönlichkeit der belgischen Kunstwelt. A GILT-BRONZE FIGURE OF UDAYANA BUDDHA Tibeto-Chinese, 18th century. H 15 cm. The standing figure is wearing monastic robes that fall in fine, concentric "ripple" folds. The right hand is raised in abhayamudra, and the left hand is lowered in varadamudra. Metal stand. Provenance: Private collection of Auguste Gérard (1852– 1922), French Minister in Beijing (1893–1897) and Ambas- sador to Japan (1907–1913). The work is likely to have been the "gilt bronze buddha" mentioned in the 1906 inventory of objects entrusted by Auguste Gérard to Viscount Paul du Toict (1847–1909), a prominent figure in the Belgian art world.
