Der kräftig gestaltete Oni schützt sich unter einem Strohhut gegen den Sojabohnenbewurf (mamemaki) zu Setsubun (Bohnenwerf-Festival). Dieser Brauch zu Frühlingsbeginn dient der symbolischen Vertreibung der bösen Wintergeister und Dämonen (oni). Natürliche himotoshi. Provenienz: Schweizer Privatsammlung. A BOXWOOD NETSUKE OF A HIDING ONI Japan, 2nd half of 19th c. H 4.3 cm. Inlaid eyes. A powerfully carved oni shelters under a straw hat to protect himself from the soybe- an-throwing (mamemaki) ritual at Setsubun at the beginning of spring. Ein schuldig blickender Junghund mit einem Fisch unter der Tatze, von dem nur noch der Kopf vor- handen ist. Signiert in polierter, umrandeter Reserve Mitsumasa. Natürliche himotoshi. The eyes are double- inlaid in horn. A young dog with a guilty look, holding a fish under its paw, only the fish’s head remains. Signed Mitsumasa in a polished, outlined space. Natural himotoshi.
