18 Paul Klee ‘Seiten-Portal’ (Sides-Portal) is one of the last works from Paul Klee’s prolific oeuvre. The striking black lines and strong colours are reminiscent of the hieroglyphic pictures and various architec- ture-related paintings of his late years in Switzerland, where he emigrated in 1933. In this last creative period, also marked by serious illness, Klee developed an irrepressible productivity and managed to further consolidate his art ‘in which, among serenity, irony and tragedy, the immeasurable appears’ (Fondation Beyeler).
