11 Preview of the Silver auction on 25 March 2021 Rare silver fromHamburg The March auction includes outstanding objects from a private Hamburg collection representing the height of the Hanseatic city’s silver production in the 17 th century. Featured is amagnificently designed Baroque covered tankard by the Hamburg goldsmith Hans Lambrecht III (ill. 3). The Lambrecht family’s network reached as far as Moscow’s Kremlin and the Danish court. The tankard, weighing almost four kilograms, bears a lid decorated with depictions of Venus, Mars and Cupid. The reliefs on the sides depict motifs of the wedding of the Lapith king Pirithous, which took a dramatic turn due to a battle with centaurs. This was originally a gift between monarchs: Prince Woldemar of Denmark presented it to the Russian Tsar Mikhail Fyodorovich in 1644. But even this lavish present could not keep the intended marriage between the Danish prince and the tsar’s daughter from falling through. A large coin goblet (ill. 1) may be regarded as a rarity, since it was generally forbidden for Hamburg silver- smiths to work with silver coins. This ceremonial cup, decorated with various coins, could therefore have been a special commission, perhaps destined as a prestigious diplomatic gift. A magnificent lidded bowl (ill. 2) may have been presented as a gift to the Rus- sian Grigory Potemkin when he was named Prince of the Holy Roman Empire in 1776. Another silver bowl (ill. 4) bears the maker’s mark ‘IB’ for Johann Brockmer, a Hamburg silversmith active in the second half of the 17 th century. 1 A large German silver coin goblet.
