14 Piet Mondrian This small-format landscape painting belongs to Piet Mondri- an’s early Impressionist work, before his Concrete Art made him world famous. Initially influenced by the painting and col- ouring of the Hague School, he turned to van Gogh and the Fauvists, and later to Braque and Picasso, before becoming a co-founder of the ‘de Stijl’ group. Estimate: CHF 60 000/90 000 Impressionist & Modern Art, 1 July 2022 Giovanni Giacometti In this work, Giacometti depicts the Hotel Palace in Maloja, en- sconced in the monumental landscape of the Bregaglia mountain range, with the peaks of the Engadine and the north Italian Alps in the background. The hotel opened in 1884, and has operated under the name ‘Palace’ since 1925. Commissioned by the hotel’s director in the late 1890s, this is one of several well-known mountain pano- ramas painted by Giacometti during this period. View of Maloja with the Hotel Palace. 1899. He was a music lover, as witnessed by this portrait of the artist’s cousin play- ing the piano. Although Bazille did not sell any of his paintings during his brief lifetime, his work was redis- covered posthumously, and is found today in numer- ous important museums and collections. The Dutchman made a name for himself as a ‘master of everyday scenes’.
