A snapshot from the past, encased in stone about 145 million years ago, will be offered in our 28 June ‘Out of This World’ auction, curated by Christian Link. By pure chance, two prehistoric creatures fromUpper Jurassic – a flying reptile and a primordial fish – were buried in mid-struggle, and preserved until now (ill. 2). Rising into the Upper Cretaceous skies around 80 million years ago was a short-tailed flying dinosaur whose wings stretched two and a half metres (ill. 1). No less impressive is the perfectly preserved skull of a sabre-toothed cat that roamed Asia 4.5 to 7 million years ago. Much younger, but nevertheless extremely rare, is the subfossil egg of an elephant bird from the 14 th century. Around 300 years later, this family of flightless birds, once common on East Africa’s coasts and on Madagascar, had become extinct. In addition to these outstanding zoological gems, an actual extra-terrestrial object will be offered: a meteorite weighing just under 200 grams and originating fromMars. Of promi- nent earthly origin is the crystal-studded glove worn by Michael Jackson on his 1984 ‘Victory tour’ (illustrations on facing page). 1 2
