6 Gerhard Richter is one of the most influential living artists of our time. His love of experimentation, cons- tant questioning of artistic practice and irrepressible curiosity make his multi-layered oeuvre unique. The work offered in our 30 June sale, ‘Kine’, 1995, is an ex- cellent example of Richter’s abstract work of this period Preview of the PostWar & Contemporary Art auction on 30 June 2022 Abstract Colour Tone (ill. 4). With his textures, Richter picks up a theme that he had already begun to work on – using different ar- tistic means – before 1970 in his abstract colour field paintings. Delicate pink tones, yellow and orange shimmering through from the background of the picture, as well as light brown tones, and green emerging through mixing, determine the colour palette of ‘Kine’. The combina- tion of colours, the dynamic emergence of newmoods, and the transparency created by the skilful removal and blurring of colours lead to a compositio n that is both abstract and intense. The densi - ty in theseworks is created by themultiple overlapping of paint layers, which resem- ble complexly woven textiles. It is precise- ly the material superficiality of colour and the calculated inclusion of chance that invite associations: in this abstraction, for example, one can recognise the colour tone of Monet’s water lilies. Richard Long’s geometric forms, laid out with stones, invite contemplative reflection (ill. 1). He keeps his ar- tistic intervention as minimal as possible, yet invests the found objects used for his works with a symbolic charge. Long communicates his own perception of na- ture through his artisticwork, makes it relatable and lifts it into the timeless and placeless through themeans of transformation. Here Long gives his much-cited ‘Circle of Life’ an archaic, metaphor-laden rendering. 1 R ichard Long (1945). Small Circle of Flint. 1984. 32 stones. D 88 cm.
