Three years later, he earned membership in the newly founded Academy of Fine Arts. Initially focusing on summer and beach landscapes, as well as animal views, Schelfhout later specialised in winter motifs, which continue to be highly sought after (ill. 4). His passing in 1870 marked the conclu- sion of the Romantic era in Dutch art. Another remarkable work is the view of Reval, today’s Esto- nian capital Tallinn (ill. 1), by the Russian landscape painter Ivan Konstantinovich Aivazovsky, on the market after many years in a private collection. Created during a time when Aivazovsky enjoyed international acclaim, with notable col- lectors such as Tsar Nicholas I of Russia and Pope Gregory XVI acquiring his works, the painting reflects his fascination with the natural beauty of the Baltic region. Eduard vonGrützner’s ‘Der Sonntagsjäger’ (ill. 3), a large-for- mat painting from 1880, was created at the pinnacle of his ar- tistic career. Immersed in the elite circles of Munich society, Grützner skilfully combines the depiction of figures of strong character with a subtle sense of humour. In the poetic genre painting ‘Jeune femme jouant de la mandoline dans l’atelier’ (ill. 2), Jean-Baptiste Camille Corot revisits a subject known since the Renaissance, and reminiscent of the Golden Age Dutch masters in its play of light and mood. This artwork, de- picting a model playing the mandolin in Corot’s studio, pays homage to his journeys to Italy in the 1820s and 1830s, a con- tinual source of enthusiasm in his written accounts. 1 I van Konstantinovich Aivazovsky (1817–1900).
