A splendid chorale book, made circa 1520 for use in a Do- minican convent, bears resemblances to the renowned Mechelen choir books attributed to Flemish painter Gerard Horenbout (ill. 1). While not directly ascribed to Horenbout, this ‘gradual’ pays homage to his artistic legacy through its stylistic elements and compositional techniques, including vivid colour contrasts. Estimate: CHF 90 000/120 000 Our forthcoming Books & Autographs auction presents a remarkable collection of 25 handwritten letters from the Austrian psychoanalyst Sigmund Freud to his Zurich col- league Alphonse Maeder, offering a glimpse into Freud’s intellectual exchanges (ill. 2). Closely allied with Carl Gustav Jung, Maeder maintained ties with Freud until the schism between Freud and Jung in 1913/1914, subsequently align- ing with Jung’s ‘Zurich School’ and discontinuing his corre- spondence with Freud. Renowned for his prolific correspondence, Freud engaged not only with fellow experts but also with figures in the fields of literature, art, and academia, including luminaries like Thomas Mann, Romain Rolland, and Albert Einstein. The letters exchanged between Freud and Maeder from 1910 to 1913 provide invaluable insights into Freud’s professional endeavours, contemporaries, literary influences, and ther- apeutic methodologies, making them not only personal artefacts but also significant contributions to the history of science. Featured manuscripts include a magnificently adorned Bible dating from around 1250, exhibiting the exemplary craftsmanship of Parisian workshops during the 13 th centu- ry (ill. 3). The illustrations blend bold, vibrant hues with lumi- nous gold accents, forming an array of meticulously crafted patterns and ornamental motifs. Intricate tendrils and ma- jestic dragons meander across the pages, while even the ti- niest figures are lavishly detailed.
