The example we are offering was apparently printed from copied wood- blocks, which were presumably made during Burgkmair’s lifetime. The work originally bore the date 1525 and the inscription ‘augspurg’ (Augsburg), the artist's place of birth and work; these details are missing from this version. A variant in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York from the original blocks shows Eve completely nude. In the present version, a leaf on a branch covers Eve’s pudendum. Burgkmair originally wanted to emphasise the paradisiacal state, but it seems that an unknown authority later changed the composition. The drawing of the lamentation of Mary Magdalene at the foot of Christ’s cross (ill. 2) is a preparatory figure study that Charles-Joseph Natoire made in 1737 for the engraving ‘Consummatum est’ by Benoît Audran the Younger. 1 H ans Burgkmair the Elder (1473–1531).
