02 pre view. 6 In 1622 Pieter Brueghel the Younger painted an Alle- gory of Autumn. The work was very likely part of a se- ries of the Four Seasons, and was last recorded on the auction market in 1935. Since then, this medium-format painting has remained in Swiss private ownership, in the same family for four generations. The symbolically charged composition is combined with a vivid depiction of rural daily life. In the fore- ground, a pig slaughter is underway, while children watch with curiosity and play with a pig’s bladder in- flated like a balloon. In the middle and background, the view opens onto a river landscape with vineyards. The subtly humorous marginal episodes underline the artist’s narrative richness and keen observation of life. The painting is signed and dated 1622. Also dated (1562) and bearing the monogram ‘JB’, is an early oil painting by Joachim Beuckelaer depicting a dramatic episode from the Old Testament: The Judge- ment of Solomon. Two women dispute a child before the king, each claiming to be its mother. Through his fa- mous test of wisdom, Solomon exposes the false moth- er. Beuckelaer unfolds the scene in a composition that is as rich in colour as it is in detail. The finely nuanced emotional responses of the figures heighten the drama of the scene. The painting was recently rediscovered in a Swiss private collection, and dates from the period in which the artist emancipated himself from his milieu and developed an independent pictorial language. Jan Lievens, who as a young artist shared a studio in Leiden with his contemporary Rembrandt, and later oriented himself towards the art of Peter Paul Rubens, painted an atmospheric landscape with a church. It once formed part of the collection of the British poli- tician Charles Cecil Cope Jenkinson (1784–1851). A particular feature of this panel painting is the branded mark on the reverse of the Antwerp panel maker Guil- liam Gabron. A richly detailed depiction of the Madonna and Child with Saints Dorothy, Catherine of Alexandria, James the Less and Anthony Abbot originates from Florence, cir- ca 1410–1415. The painting is attributed to the circle of Gherardo Starnina and Lorenzo Monaco. Brueghel’s view of daily life Preview of the OldMaster Paintings auction on 27March 2026 1 Jan Lievens (1607–1674).
