pre view. 02 15 Specialists: Offices & representatives: Fabric of dreams Preview of the Decorative Arts auction on 27March 2025 Decorative textile art encompasses a variety of tech- niques such as embroidery, quilting, appliqué and openwork, as well as the painting, printing and dyeing of fabrics, often using reserve techniques. Textile arts and crafts in Europe are dominated by wool, linen and cotton. Even in ancient times, yarns wrapped in met- al foil were used, and Chinese silk fabrics reached the West via the Silk Road. From the early Middle Ages on- wards, the importation of ornate silk fabrics flourished, especially from Byzantium and the Orient. During the Gothic and Renaissance periods, Italy and Spain es- tablished themselves as important production centres, while embroidery experienced a particular heyday in 1 An Italian Renaissance silk on linen wall hanging depicting an elaborate trophy. From the 15 th century onwards, tapes- tries from Flanders dominated the international market, until France took the lead in the 17 th and 18 th centuries. Intensely coloured textiles, some embroidered with the finest silver and gold threads, from early Italian produc- tion from the 15 th to 18 th centuries are part of a private collection offered in our auction. It comprises thirteen lots, including large coverings and cloth panels as well as robes worn by ecclesiastical and secular dignitaries. The highlight of the collection is a large-format trophy wall hanging from the mid-16 th century, preserved in im- pressively fresh colours (ill. 1). 1 over view.
