9 Preview of the Swiss Art auction on 23 June 2023 A riot of colour and Alpine light In an oversized format, Augusto Giacometti depicts the ‘excavation’ of an object whose shape and size Alpine light (ill. 3). Adolf Dietrich’s quiet 'Springtime at the Untersee' from 1932 is not characterised by ex- pressive complementary colours as in Giacometti’s or- chard, but rather by contemplativeblue-green tones (ill. 1). 4 resemble the head of the Statue of Liberty in New York (ill. 4). This surreal scene is situated near the sea, which can be seen in the background. Giacometti links a possibly real landscape with the oversized bust without reference to reality and in this way creates a kind of dream sequence. Félix Val- lotton’s harbour painting has a similarly mystical quality; here the special effect is created by the al- most magical backlighting and the mirror-smooth water (ill. 5). In 1929, Giovanni Giacometti im- bued his orchard with a rush of or- ange and green colour, as if the tree branches were flaming upwards (ill. 2). The work belongs to the artist’s final creative phase. A completely different mood awaits the viewer in his 'View of Lake Sils fromCapolago' from1927.
