Sold for CHF 215 000 Consign now: Jewellery & Wristwatches The June auctions for jewellery and wristwatch- es were an unqualified success. A necklace of natural pearls and diamonds of exceptional qual- ity (ill. 2) attributed to the luxury brand Cartier far exceeded its estimate of 70 000/100 000 Swiss francs and realised a hammer pric e of CHF 400 000. The eye-catch- e r of this elegant piece of jewellery is the diamond-set clasp with a dark grey natural saltwater pearl. At the watches auction on 17 June, an early Patek Philippe with a perpetual calendar (ill. 4) changed h ands for half a million francs. Als o in demand was a loose oval emera ld cabochon from Colombia (ill. 3), which sold for CHF 215 000. A Zurich flea-market find caused quite a stir at the Asian Art auction. Ten years ago, a collector discovered and acquired a work of art there without knowing who painted it or what it depicted. As it turned out, it rep- resents the Monkey King Sun Wukong and his entou- rage in the opera ‘Uproar in Heaven’ (ill. 7) and is a work by Lin Fengmian, one of the most important represen- tatives of modern Chinese painting. The mixed media on paper realised CHF 375 000. In the same auction, the Rietberg Museum in Zurich acquired a pair of 300-year-old standing screens from the Hasegawa School inKyoto (ill. 6),whose founderHasegawaTôhaku is one of Japan’s most famous artists. Two magnificent depictions were worth CHF 150 000 to the museum. The final result CHF 93 000 francs reflects the out- standing quality of a large gilt-bronze figure of Ratnasambhava from 17 th -century Tibet (ill. 8). 1 2 3 4 4 Patek Philippe.
