pre view. 02 7 5 Precious fabrics This figural winged altarpiece remained in the same family for almost a century. It is the work of the Wesel painter Jan Baegert, who was active in western Germany in the decades around 1500, a period of transition from the Middle Ages to modern times. Initially assigned the name ‘Master of Cappenberg’, after a triptych in Cap- penberg near Münster, he was identified as Jan Baegert around 1950. His style is characterised by precious bro- cade fabrics, the linear treatment of hair and a masterful use of colour. Jan Baegert (circa 1465–circa 1530). House altarpiece with the crucifixion flanked by St Peter and St Catherine. Oil on panel. 62 × 46 cm and 66.5 × 21.5 cm each. Estimate: CHF 60 000/80 000 6 Subtle colouring Its balanced composition and painterly quality make this painting one of the most appealing works in Cornelis de Heem’s oeuvre. The combination of flowers and fruit, the subtle colouring, which is present in many details of the picture, and the subdued light give the painting a distinct charm. Works like this one from the 1670s form the core of de Heem’s influence on the next generation of artists. He created prototypes that were taken up well into the 18 th century, for example by Abraham Mignon and Rachel Ruysch. Cornelis de Heem (1631–1695). Fruit and flower still life. Oil on canvas. 76 × 66 cm. Estimate: CHF 80 000/120 000 4 Mourning star Abraham Govaerts chose a well-known story from Ovid’s Metamorphoses for his 1618 painting: Venus sits in her chariot drawn by doves and mourns the recently deceased Adonis, who was fatally injured by the tusks of a boar while hunting. In the background, Adonis’ dogs are chasing the wounded boar into the forest. The vil- lage view on the left contrasts with the dramatic scene on the right. While the forest landscape is by Govaerts, the figures could be the fruit of an early collaboration with Frans Francken the Younger. Abraham Govaerts (1589–1626).
