This is partly to do with its international reputa- tion for the highest quality, but also with its at- tention to detail – both in matters of design and craftsmanship. The meticulous finishing and engraving of the calibres are particularly strik- ing. These hand-finishing steps make the move- ment’s plate and rotor shine and refract the light – this is how a mechanical watch is transformed into a piece of jewellery. In our November auction, we will offer a very spe- cial Patek Philippe ‘Officer’s Case’ perpetual cal- endar wristwatch (ill. 4). Mastery is evident in the details, such as the combination of Roman nu- merals for the hour markers and Arabic numerals for the five-minute increments. The retrograde date display uses Arabic numerals in a classic serif font and lets the red date hand run over an arc on the inner ring. To the right of the date at the 3 o’clock position is a month window; at the 9 o’clock position is the day of the week display. Above the 6 o’clock position is the moon phase, showing the moon and stars in gold against a midnight blue background. The moon phase dis- play is accurate up to 122 years and 45 days. After that, it would only need to be corrected by one day to be accurate for that long again. Diamonds of fancy-orangy-pink color are highly sought after, and a ring in our November auction is set with just such a precious stone (ill. 1). Most diamonds of this colour come from the Argyle mine in Western Australia, which has been closed for two years now. Another ring with a 3.70 carat pear-shaped diamond of fine quality is by Bulgari (ill. 8). Fine sapphires from the Himalayan region of Kashmir are among the most desirable due to their rarity, as they were only mined in larger quan- tities for a few years at the end of the 19 th century (ill. 7) Tourmalines in turquoise-blue shades are also coveted. These stones, discovered only at the end of the 1980s, receive their colour from the element copper. The Paraiba tourmaline and diamond ring we offer shows this rare gemstone in all its glory (ill. 9). 1 Patek Philippe World Time watch, platinum.
