12 Aristide Maillol: genius of sculpture Nudes by Aristide Maillol (1861–1944) are strongl y reminis- cent of antique examples. The artist encountere d them not only in the halls of the Louvre, but also on a trip to Greece with his collector and patron Harry Graf Kessler in 190 8. The French artist had a lasting influence on 20th-century scul pture through his harmonious combination of classicism and abs traction; Rodin saw him as a ‘genius of sculpture’. A special exhib ition on view at the Kunsthaus Zurich until 22 January 2023 presen ts 140 of Maillol’s works, including many of his nudes. Estimate: CHF 100 000/150 000 János Vaszary: the Hungarian Fauve In our December auction we will offer several paintings from various creative phases of the Hungarian artist János Vaszary (1867–1939). Travels toMunich and to the renowned Académie Julian in Paris at the end of the 19 th century enabled Vaszary to develop a variety of painting techniques. The Hungarian painters Bertalan Székely and Károly Ferencz y also had a significant influence on his artistic development. The large-format ‘Landscape in Teichstadt’ painted by Vaszary in 1913 re- calls the works of the French Fauvists and the German Expressionists in its colour palette an d style. His ‘Woman in a deckchair’, painted in the 1930s, impressively demonstrates Vaszary’s pictorial composit ion skills and his virtuoso brushwork. A large solo exhibition of more than 70 of Vaszary’s works is on exhibit at the Hungarian National Gallery MNG in Budapest until 15 January 2023. János Vaszary (1867–1939).
