PP. 22–23 Review of the autumn 2022 auctions OVER view. P. 23 Contacts CALENDAR view. P. 24 Art is a particular form of communication that has existed throughout the ages – across borders, continents and cultures. Therefore it is hardly surprising to see examples of this dialogue again and again in the visual and applied arts. Cuno Amiet’s female nude from 1913, ‘The Truth’, in our Swiss Art auction bears a resemblance to a Buddhist deity, and Xi Beihong’s foal from our Asian Art auction is hardly imaginable without references to Western art. Whether spatially distant but close in time or vice versa, works of art – like neighbouring colours – communicatewith each other, influence each other and also change our perception of them. In the Renaissance, col- lectors in tune with this universal resonance composed cabinets of cu- riosities and rarities, attempting to capture the kaleidoscopic splendour of art and nature. Suchmodes of collecting are experiencing an upswing. New dialogues are being staged between recent and ancient, near and far, as our specialist for Old Masters, Karoline Weser, notes in the inter- view on pages 20/21. An openness to works of art that lie beyond our previous experience facilitates and stimulates this communication and dialogue – enhancing our appreciation of the art itself. In this spirit, I wish you many new discoveries and rediscoveries in our November/December auctions. Yours, Cyril Koller KOLLERview is published four times annually, in English, French and German.
