3 Preview of the PostWar & Contemporary Art auction on 30 November 2023 Parallel worlds running down converges in random streaks. A contin- uation of this idea was Davenport’s contribution to the 2017 Venice Biennale: in ‘Giardini Colourfall’, the paint went beyond the support to pool and merge at the base of the work. The ‘striped paintings’ of German artist Anselm Reyle, including this example from 2006, form an important series in his oeuvre (ill. 2). Like Davenport, Reyle is fas- cinated by this technique, but also by the clichés asso- ciated with these paintings. Characteristic of his works is the use of foundmaterials: his stripes are composed of acrylic, metal foil, plexiglass and structural pastes, creating a composition that is as simple as it is full of tension, advancing beyond the painterly level into the three-dimensional. Works by Frank Stella, Kenneth Noland, Barnett Newman and Bridget Riley were early examples of this genre, which has been frequently re- visited and reinterpreted. The British artist IanDavenport is not interested in cre- ating a narrative, but rather in experimenting with the effect and interplay of colours. ‘Colourcade: Orange and Yellow’ from 2015 offered here is an outstanding example of his work (ill. 1). Using a syringe, he applies the paint to the upper part of a steel sheet and initially lets it run down randomly. Then he begins to guide the irregular lines to create parallel stripes. These ‘poured lines’ have become his trademark. The other principal series in his work are his ‘puddle paintings’, including the present work. In this cycle, the artist bends the lower part of the steel sheet upwards so that the paint
