7 In the garden of dreams Camille Pissarro’s landscape ‘Prairies à Gisors’ was among the works that the artist kept for himself and later passed on to his wife Julie (ill. 1). From her it passed on to their son Lucien, and finally to Lucian’s wife. In this way, the work, painted in 1885, remained in the artist’s family until the 1950s. Pissarro captured the summer view across a mead- ow near the rural village with a view of the bell tower of Saint-Gervais-Saint-Protais. Gisors is near Érag- ny-sur-Epte in the Oise department, where Pissarro lived from 1884 until his death in 1903. These quiet- er, more rural surroundings suited Pissarro’s artistic sensibility. He painted his garden, meadows, neigh- bouring villages such as Gisors and Bazincourt and the workers in the fields. Pissarro developed Divisionist painting techniques that would come to define his Neo-Impressionist works in the late 1880s. In 1892, this painting was exhibited by Paul Durand-Ruel in Paris. The art critic Alfred Ernst wrote about the exhibition in the maga- zine ‘La Paix’, praising this work in par- ticular: ‘Nothing is so rich, so luxuriant, so fresh and profound as the garden of Gisors, where the air circulates, ca- ressing the dense green under a vast, infinitely bright sky’. Gustave Loiseau’s autumn landscape is also influenced by Neo-Impression- ist models (ill. 2). With a loose brush- stroke, he transports us to an unspec- ified river, as in many of his landscape paintings.
