It was here that Pierre-Auguste Renoir settled with his family in 1907, and where he would live and work until his death in late 1919. The mild climate made Renoir's arthritis more bearable. During these productive years, he created lovely paintings that celebrate the tranquillity and beauty of Mediterranean landscapes and the unique light of the south. Renoir’s villa, ‘Les Collettes,’ is now a museum dedicated to his life and art. Pierre-Auguste Renoir (1841–1919). Paysage. Cagnes. Circa 1910. Oil on canvas. 28 × 46.5 cm. Gus- tave Loiseau decomposes this winter scene into poin- tillist structures, sensitively differentiating between the landscape, the sky and the calmly flowing Seine. De- spite the predominantly cool colours, the painting radi- ates a cheerful lightness, due to Loiseau’s masterful use of beautiful colour accents with vibrant textures. Gustave Loiseau (1865–1935). Tournedos-sur-Seine. Neige, givre, soleil. Circa 1900. Oil on canvas. 54.6 × 73 cm. Estimate: CHF 150 000/250 000 3 Signac’s Norman ships Even as a young man, Paul Signac was fascinated by the picturesque coastal towns of Normandy. He was only 20 when he painted the present work in the fishing vil- lage of Port-en-Bessin. Signac’s enthusiasm for the art of the Impressionists around Claude Monet, with which he had come to know through the exhibitions of the Parisian gallerist Durand-Ruel, is already evident here. Free-flowing brushstrokes lend the subject a certain grandeur. In addition to his characteristic style, it was above all his particular colour palette that would shape Signac’s work in the years to come. Paul Signac (1863–1935). Port-en-Bessin. Brick. 1884. Oil on canvas. 61.5 × 38 cm. Estimate: CHF 80 000/140 000 1 2 3
