KOLLER VIEW 4/24

01 our view. In the last months of his life, Ferdinand Hodler created a cycle of around fifteen landscape paintings in his Gene- va apartment on the Quai du Mont-Blanc, all of which show the same view from his window, across the lake to the Alps and the Mont Blanc. In these famous paintings, featured in the Fondation Beyeler’s impressive exhibition of Hodler’s late work eleven years ago, the artist achieved a synthesis of his lifelong reflections on the amalgam of light, colour and painting. ‘Now it is glorious. Now I have the great spaces!’ Hodler said when he visited the exhibition of his final paintings just a few days before his death in May 1918 at the Galerie Moos in Geneva. In our Swiss Art Auction on 29 November, we will be presenting one of these impressive landscape panoramas, ‘Lake Geneva with Mont Blanc in the early morning’ (pp. 12/13). Another of Ferdinand Hodler’s great contemporaries who conceived his paintings in series was Claude Monet. Monet’s painting in our Impressionist & Modern Art auction, ‘Le bassin d'Argenteuil’ of 1875, appears to have been created directly on site. With spontaneous brushstrokes, the 34-year-old Monet captures a warm sum- mer's day, complete with a shimmering midday sun and reflections in the moving waters of the Seine (pp. 10/11). The PostWar & Contemporary auction on 28 November also offers a highly interesting selection, including works by Fischli/Weiss, Roni Horn, Keith Haring, Alexander Calder and Robert Rauschenberg. Jewellery and watches (pp. 16/17), Asian art (p. 22) and artefacts from our special auction ‘Out of this World’ (p. 23) will round off our auction series, which also includes a private collection of important 19 th -century decorative objects (interview with Stephan Koller, pp. 20/21), as well a series of online auctions. During our auction preview from 20 to 25 November we offer art lovers the opportunity to view the over 2000 objects that will be auctioned between 26 November and 5 December.
