914* THE ANVIL CHONDRITE METEORITE Official meteorite name: NWA 4029 Found: Northwest Africa, 2016 2 025 g 14.5 × 11 × 7 cm So-called ‘oriented’ meteorites are formed when a meteorite does not topple over or begin to tumble on its fiery journey through the earth’s atmosphere. This often results in a meteorite of a rather strange shape. Chondrites were formed 4.5 billion years ago by the agglomeration of chondrules (silicate spheres embedded in a fine-grained groundmass) and dust in the solar nebula and are thus the oldest rocks in the solar system, much older than our Earth. Their composition corresponds to the chemical composition of the original solar nebula, with the exception of some elements and noble gases. This anvil-shaped meteorite has a wonderful presence and is in very good condition. The cut on the base was made to perform a scientific analysis of the meteorite.
