918* ALAN SHEPARD Hand-signed Maxfli golf ball USA, 1980–1990 5.2 × 5.2 × 5.2 cm (in case) Certificate: JSA-James Spence Authentication, New Jersey, January 3, 2012 Alan Shepard (1923–1998) was an American astronaut, naval aviator and test pilot. He became famous for being the first golf player on the moon! In 1959 he became part of the first group of NASA astronauts (Mercury Seven) to go in space. On the Apollo 14 mission in 1971, he walked on the moon and became the first person to actually hit a golf ball there – out of one of the universe’s largest bunkers, one-handed. The golf ball presented here is personally signed by Alan Shepard. ‘Straight as a die, one more ... miles and miles and miles...’ were the words uttered by the jubilant astronaut as his ball sailed out of view, swallowed by the infinite blackness of space.
