It is more common than other gemstones. Its name is probably derived from the ancient Persian (lazhward, lazaxard or lajoard), which means „blue“. Already the ancient Egyptians since the 4th Dynasty, Persians and the Romans used the powdered mineral as eye ma- ke-up. It was also used in many places for wall paintings, and later in painting and manuscripts. In esotericism, the stone is said to increase mental receptivity and imagination. The earliest mention of the mineral goes back to the Roman scholar Pliny the Elder (23/24-79). Already in ancient times the mineral was extremely popular and was used for many kinds of art objects or finely pulverized as eye shadow. It is considered one of the oldest known green pigments used in paintings. Malachite is traded in esoteric circles as one of the most important healing stones and is said to have healing properties, among other things, for headaches, specific female disorders, eye inflammation, and also increase the perception and concen- tration.
