1854* BELL X-1 MODEL SPEEDOF SOUND AUTO ROCKET Signed by Pilot Chuck Yeager 35 x 28 x 25 cm Provenance: Private collection of Florian Noller (D) Charles Elwood, who became famous in aviation history as Chuck Yeager, was a U.S. World War II veteran aviator and test pilot who officially became the first person to break the sound barrier in level flight. This happened in 1947, and Bell X-1 was the name of the experimental aircraft that made this milestone possible. The aircraft reached the speed of 1125 kilo- meters per hour at an altitude of about 13,100 meters. Now his plane is on permanent display at the Smithso- nian Institution‘s National Air and Space Museum. This model of the Bell X-1, signed by Chuck Yeager, is a coveted collector‘s item.
