1885* APOLLO 15 MISSION Nasa code AS15-88-11866 Astronaut James B. Irwin gives a military salute while standing beside the deployed United States flag. Vintage chromogenic print on Kodak paper 20 x 25 cm Provenance: Italian private collection Astronaut James B. Irwin was the eighth man to walk on the surface of the Moon. Apollo 15 was the fourth manned lunar landing with a major scientific program. The crew spent 66 hours and 55 minutes on the Moon. To the right of the saluting Irwin, you can see the first vehicle on the Moon. This vehicle, called the Lunar Rowing Vehicle or Moon Buggy, could reach a speed of 13 kilometers per hour. Although this seems to be not very fast and efficient for Earth, it made it possible for astronauts to explore further distances. The pictures Neil Armstrong took on the lunar surface document the 2-hour 31 mi- nute long stay and the first scientific experiments that were con- ducted during this mission. This photograph shows Buzz Aldrin installing the solar wind sail. This was needed for the Solar Wind Composition Experiment: the only experiment on the mission that was not planned in the U.S., but in Switzerland, at the Physics Institute of the University of Bern. Due to time constraints, the solar wind sail was erected on the Moon before the U.S. flag was raised. CHF 1 000 / 2 500 (€ 970 / 2 430) | 91
