1887* SPACE SHUTTLE MISSION STS-41-B Nasa code S84-27562 Vintage chromogenic print on Kodak paper 20 x 25 cm Provenance: Italian private collection This mission of the space shuttle Challenger took place on February 3, 1984. Its highlight was the outboard mission, during which the astronauts did not use restrictive tethers. In the photo, ast- ronaut Bruce McCandless is floating freely in space with the help of the 153-kilogram heavy Manned Maneuvering Unit (MMU), controlling his movements with his hands. Thanks to the nitrogen-propelled MMU, the astronauts were able to move a hundred meters away from the shuttle. Nevertheless, after three NASAmissions, the MMUs were no longer used: the controls proved too inaccurate, making their use risky.
