20 Gerrit van Honthorst Van Honthorst, a student of AbrahamBloemaert, is considered a master of accentua ted light. His genre scenes as well as his religious motifs show the events on the canvas theatrica lly exagger- ated and dramatized by a focused light. For his atmospheric night subjects, often bat hed in torch or candlelight, he was given the nickname ’Gherardo della Notte’. Gerrit van Honthors t was one of the most celebrated artists of his time; his clients included several European royal fa milies. Cara- vaggio’s lasting influence on Honthorst and his Dutch circle is undeniable, and their works in turn influenced subsequent generations of painters, including Rembrandt, Frans Hals a nd Vermeer. In 1794 Boilly’s erotically charged everyday depictions of the French bourg eoisie earned him an official reprimand; after that he shifted to harm- less history paintings and portrait comm issions.
