22 Marc Chagall Chagall’s enthusiasm for the world of the circus and the theatre is evid ent throughout his work. Together with his friend, the Parisian art dealer Ambroise Vollard, with whom he shared this pas- sion, he conceived the idea of an illustrated book about the circus, but th e series of mostly colour- ed lithographs was not completed until 1967, decades after Vollard’s d eath, when the publisher E. Sold for CHF 95 000 The Seckendorff chest of drawers This stately piece of furniture was probably commission ed by Carl-Frie- drich-Wilhelm, Margrave of Brandenburg-Ansbach, as part of a larger ensemble. Its creator, the ébéniste François Lieutaud, w ho was trained in Marseilles and later worked in Paris, represents the m ature aesthetic sensibility in French furniture making around 1730, s hortly after the reign of Louis XIV. Of excellent craftsmanship and typi cal of Lieutaud are the gilt-bronze masks, the escutcheons and the sab ot feet. François Lieutaud. Paris circa 1728–30. Sold for CHF 165 0 00 A pair of im portant silver lidded tureens These elegantly designed tureens belonged to the Swiss colonel Samuel von Tscharner, who led the Bernese Régimen t du Roi in the service of the Sardinian-Piedmontese king in the mid-18 th century. His military rank and diplomatic role in the renewal of the salt supply contracts between Bern and the Kingdom of Sardinia-Piedm ont likely made him a wealthy man.
