The way back in winter. 1955. Oil on hardboard. 75 × 100 cm. Estimate: CHF 80 000/120 000 Segantini’s artistic work is closely linked to the Upper Engadine mountain landscape aroundMaloja, where heworked throughout his life. The lasting influenceof his extremely successful father Giovanni Segantini on his son’s painting style and motifs is undeniable. Both were deeply attached to their homeland and devoted themselves to the depiction of light-flooded landscapes using the Divisionist technique. Ferdinand Hodler (1853–1918). Pine by a stream. 1910. Oil on canvas. 90.5 × 80 cm. Estimate: CHF 750 000/950 000 This landscape from the area of Lake Thun was in German collections for a long time, among others it was handled by the influential Berlin art dealer Paul Cassirer. Félix Vallotton (1865–1925). Baigneuse aux mouettes. 1919. Oil on canvas. 61 × 46 cm. Estimate: CHF 70 000/100 000 With this seemingly gigantic and immobile female figure in the sea – apparently standing in front of cliffs in Norman- dy – Vallotton formulates a pictorial riddle, while giving the viewer barely any clues to solve it. Giovanni Giacometti (1868–1933). Snow-covered village, Capolago. 1932. Oil on canvas. 60 × 50 cm. Estimate: CHF 150 000/250 000 From 1911 Giovanni Giacometti maintained a stu- dio in Capolago in the historic Mendrisiotto region of Ticino in Switzerland. He made several views of the village, and this winter subject demonstrates his virtuoso use of colour.
