02 pre view. 6 1 Allegory of History Charles Errard the Younger, painter, architect and en- graver, followed in the footsteps of his father, whom he later surpassed. Originally from Nantes, Errard travelled to Rome before moving to Paris, where he decorated royal palaces, including the Louvre. Errard’s depiction of the allegory of History is inspired by Antiquity. The main protagonist is depicted in a Grecian profile, and warm colours enhance the composition. The painting comes from a private collection, and was on loan to the Musée cantonal des Beaux-Arts in Lausanne for over a decade. Charles Errard the Younger (circa 1601–1689). Estimate: CHF 25 000/35 000 2 Martha tames the dragon Sitting on a rock, Martha of Bethany holds a jug of holy water and an aspergillum in her hands, while a dragon devours a knight on the right. According to tradition, Martha was on an evangelical mission in the south of France. On the road, she encountered a dragon that was gobbling up travellers who wanted to cross the Rhône. With the help of holy water, Martha managed to tame the ravenous beast. Professor Ilja Veldman identi- fies the painting, which was created around 1528/30, as an autograph work by Cornelis Jacobsz. On the left, open oys- ters provide a glimpse of their inner pearl-like shimmering reflections. On the right, more seafood is waiting to be opened and eaten, and the painter has added a blos- som-white cloth in the foreground. Born in Antwerp, Wil- lem Gabron travelled to Paris and Rome between 1647 and 1660 to perfect his painting. The present work is based on a composition by the important Dutch still life painter Jan Davidsz. de Heem. Willem Gabron (1619–1678). Still life with silver jug, roemer glass, oysters and lemon.
