pre view. 02 7 4 Lucas Cranach’s St Paul The present portrait of St Paul is one of the most beau- tiful religious works by Lucas Cranach the Younger. The small-format panel, which was probably created for pri- vate devotion, boasts an excellent state of preservation and expressive colours. Cranach depicts the Apostle Paul writing his epistles. The painter’s artistic mastery is evident in every detail of the work, and it is also signif- icant in terms of religious politics, as St Paul’s epistles had a great influence on Martin Luther’s teachings.
