KOLLER VIEW 2/23
5 Preview of the PostWar & Contemporary Art auction on 22 June 2023 Born in 1981, Shara Hughes, who lives and works in Brooklyn, NY, is among the most sought-after con- temporary artists. Since 2014, the intricate interior views of her early work have morphed into unreal, almost otherworldly landscapes, so-called ‘invented landscapes’. This art is not so much a portrayal of an actual scene as a typeof self-portrait and self-reflection, associated with an oscillation between abstraction Feminine perspectives and figuration. ‘Night Night’ (ill. 1) is a testament to Shara Hughes’ skilful use of different perspectives as well as her ability to continually challenge the viewer’s imagination. The work ‘Cercle Coupé’ from 1972 offered here (ill. 2) is an impressive example of the textile art of Polish art- ist Magdalena Abakanowicz. She has knotted an oval carpet fromorange sisal, with two ridges in themiddle, which in turn conceal a slit. The title is a technical de- scription of what is there. What viewers see and inter- pret is up to them. Artists Max Cole and Marcia Hafif were almost com- pletely forgotten for many years, but now their work is being rediscovered (ill. 4 and 5). Chantal Joffe’s art also makes important contributions to feminist discourse and the representation of women in art. Through her expressive realist portraits of women and children, often characterised by intimate physicality, the artist raises questions about female identities, roles and ex- periences (ill. 3). 1 D etail: Shara Hughes (1981).
