GUILLERMOWIEDEMANN

(Munich 1905 - 1969 Key Biscayne)

Untitled. 1940.

Oil on canvas.

Signed and dated lower left: W. E. Wie-

demann / 1940. Inscribed lower right:

MELGAR.

80 x 60 cm.

Provenance: Private collection, Germany.

Wilhelm Egon Wiedemann was born in Mu-

nich in 1905. After his work was deemed

degenerate art and he became a victim of

sanctions, he fled to Colombia.

His first exhibition in his new homeland

was held in 1940, which was an immediate

success.

Over the following decades, he managed

to become one of the country’s most

significant artists. He was heavily influ-

enced by his tropical surroundings and his

depictions became increasingly non-

representational. As you can see from

our wonderful painting, his abstracts are

derived fromwild, rainforest landscapes.

We see a mother and her child amid an

impressive scenery of large, sturdy trees.

The inscription in the bottom right pro-

bably refers to Melgar, a town just outside

Bogotá, which today is a popular recreati-

on area for residents of the big city.
