In July 1946 Pablo Picasso visits the annual
ceramic exhibition in Vallauris with his
friend the engraver Louis Fort. He is shown
around by the organizers and is particularly
interested in the works by the Madoura
workshop. He asks to get to know their
owners Suzanne and Alain Ramié. During
his subsequent visit he creates two cera-
mics right away.
Already in the following year, he gets his
own workplace at the Madoura workshop
and starts designing ceramics by means of
sketches. In the beginning he experiments
with the newmaterial and is supported by
the experienced ceramist Suzanne Ramié.
After first prototypes, he quickly creates
editions of his ceramic works.
For Picasso working with clay and plaster is
another form of original prints.
