Ferdinand Hodler’s early vertical landscape ‘The Salève in autumn’ from 1891, consigned from a distinguished Swiss private collection and most re- cently exhibited at the Kunstmuseum Lucerne, was painted in the same year as his iconic work ‘The Night’. The landscape, widely shown in exhibitions and reproduced in catalogues and publications, achieved CHF 2.1 million, more than three times its lower estimate.
