MOSHE CASTEL

(Jerusalem 1909 - 1968 Tel Aviv)

Café au Beaulieu de Safed.

Oil on canvas.

Signed lower left: Castel.

33 x 41.5 cm.

Provenance: Private collection, Switzerland.

Moshé Elazar Castel came from a religious

Jewish family. He studied art in Paris.

There he studied the painting techniques

of Rembrandt, Velasquez, Delacroix and

Courbet, and copied their style. For him,

the materials and the style and manner of

applying the paint, and how it is placed, are

the most important thing. Castel’s artistic

style is informed on the one hand by Euro-

pean abstract art, and on the other by the

ancient writing and mythological symbols

of Jewish and Sumerian culture, which he

accentuates in rich, powerful colours.
