The models for the present series „Flo-
wers“ from 1974, come from a wallpaper
pattern book and A.S. Barnes’ „Interpretive
Floral Designs“. They are characterised by
their fine, reserved drawing style, which
is supported by the discreet handcolou-
ring. Compared with other works from
the 1970s, such as „Ladies & Gentlemen“
(Lots 3708-3716), neither the motif, nor
its centrality in the composition, nor the
otherwise powerful, striking colours are
seen to dominate. They are reminiscent of
„Shoes“ and „Cats“ series from the 1950s
and are clearly indicative of Warhol’s roots
as a graphic designer.
