The models for the present series „Flo-

wers“ from 1974, come from a wallpaper

pattern book and A.S. Barnes’ „Interpretive

Floral Designs“. They are characterised by

their fine, reserved drawing style, which

is supported by the discreet handcolou-

ring. Compared with other works from

the 1970s, such as „Ladies & Gentlemen“

(Lots 3708-3716), neither the motif, nor

its centrality in the composition, nor the

otherwise powerful, striking colours are

seen to dominate. They are reminiscent of

„Shoes“ and „Cats“ series from the 1950s

and are clearly indicative of Warhol’s roots

as a graphic designer.
