Der in Deutschland geborene Carl Rungius
geht 1884-96 zu Jagdausflügen nach
Maine und Kanada. Er ist von der dortigen
Wildnis so begeistert, dass er diese fortan
malerisch einzufangen gedenkt und nicht
mehr zum „alten Kontinent“ zurückkehrt.
Sein Hauptmotiv und somit das wichtigste
Sujet seines Werks ist der Elch. Rungius
wird oft als der bedeutenste „american
wildlife painter" angesehen.
